On April 7th Phillips de Pury & Company hosted their first design auction of 2011 at their London offices. With a total of 154 lots on offer the sale ended up selling only 67.53% (around 10% less than this years current average) of the lots bringing in a grand total of £2,062,025 in sales, just below their average estimated total of £2,423,500.
As with the past sales of 2011 we are seeing a very steady market; later this month our DeTnk Market Report subscribers will receive a quarterly market update providing a better idea of the flow of collectibles market.
The item that fetched the highest price in this auction was Charlotte Perriand's Bahut sideboard with sold for £145,250; followed by Ron Arad's Two legs and a table which brought in £79,250.
This auction was the first glimpse into the status of the contemporary market. In the top 20 lots sold by price we find a nice selection of contemporary pieces including Ron Arad's (mentioned above), Sebastian Brajkovic's Lathe VIII chair (£49,250), and Campana Brother's Sonia Diniz chair (£34,850).
While many contemporary designers did well, Atelier Van Lieshout's Prick lamp (Thin) was bought-in. Overall, however, this sale hints to a potentially promising year for the contemporary market. While this sale collectors sticked the the big contemporary players they bid an average of ~10% above the average estimate for the three lots.
With 89 of the 104 lots sold reaching or exceeding their average estimate it was hard to find a 'deal' in this sale. However, someone managed to take home Babs Haenen's Vase form for 40% under the average estimated price (sold for £1,500).
