"Beijing (AFP) - A Chinese museum has been ordered to close after thousands of its historical exhibits were found to be fake, state-run media said on Thursday.
Police shut down the Lucheng Museum, in the northeastern province of Liaoning, after finding that almost a third of the 8,000 items on display were not genuine, the Global Times newspaper reported.
In order to protect the actual 3,300-year-old tomb from the wear and tear of thousands of tourist visits, a team used high-resolution laser scanning and digital photography, high-density polyurethane and resins, and high-definition printers to “rematerialize the physical site”.
“Complete with vodka bottles, cigarette butts and pregnancy tests, the installation didn’t win the Turner prize during the year of its entry in 1999, … [but it did spark] a media frenzy and causing visitor numbers to the Tate Britain to hit record highs. Fifteen years on, it can be yours for an estimated price of between £800,000 and £1.2m.”
