Carnegie Museum of Art Purchases 'Slice Chair'

Industry Gallery announced the acquisition by Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh of a limited edition aluminium Slice chair by Danish-born designer Mathias Bengtsson.

This is the first work by Bengtsson to enter the museum's collection. The design was conceived in 1999 and first executed in clay. The Carnegie chair, number 15 from an edition of 20, is comprised of 125 3mm thick horizontal hand polished aluminum pieces and was manufactured August 2010.

Bengtsson is known for cutting edge designs made from industrial and high tech materials. The Helen Johnston Acquisition Fund and Richard L. Simmons Acquisition Fund made the acquisition possible.

"Mathias Bengtsson's ingenious, laser-cut and layered aluminum Slice chair is a perfect addition to Carnegie Museum of Art's collections of both aluminum and of innovatively designed seating furniture. A visually arresting and sculptural form, the Slice chair has the potential to become one of the museum's most celebrated design objects," said Rachel Delphia, associate curator of decorative arts at Carnegie Museum of Art.
