Christies announces 2010 a 'Record Year'
Design Market
Christies International reported a record year in 2010; bringing in a profit of 3.2 billion pounds (5 billion US dollars) from art and other collectable sales.
Highlights from the year include the record sale for Picasso’s 1932 painting “Nude, Green Leaves and Bust” selling for $106.5 million in New York this May. This is all time record for a painting on auction.
Chrisities reports that the Europeans collectors have remained steady throughout 2010 while the Americans, who were more reserved in 2009, returned to their previous spending figures. They also report a rise in the market by Chinese collectors and a continuing increase in spending by Russian collectors.
These figures are looking at all of Christie's 2010 sales; in the upcoming weeks we will be releasing the 2011 DeTnk Design Market Report that will focus specifically on design sales and figures for the past 5 years.
