Bouroullec Brothers for nanimarquina

Paris
The Bouroullec brothers continue their study of simplicity and elegance with their new Losanges collection, premiering at Maison & Object in Paris. In creating this rug they set about reinterpreting the traditional Persian rug using the ancient kilim technique.
Technically complex, the Losanges collection requires great skill as it involves combining 13 colours through the geometrical rhombus shape, a great challenge for the craftsmen of Northern Pakistan. As well as being crafted by hand, the Afghan wool is also spun by hand, which allows for some unique colour tones to be highlighted which make each rhombus different and each rug a unique item.
Graduates of the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs de Paris and the École nationale supérieure d’arts de Cergy-Pontoise, respectively, Ronan (born 1971) and Erwan (born 1976) Bouroullec began working together in 1999. Their collaboration is an ongoing dialogue nourished by a shared demand for accuracy and finesse.
Today, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec design for numerous manufacturers, such as Vitra, Kvadrat, Magis, Kartell, Established and Sons, Ligne Roset, Axor, Alessi, Issey Miyake, Cappellini and nanimarquina. At the same time, they conduct research - an activity essential to the development of their work, in collaboration with Galerie kreo, where they held four personal exhibitions between 2001 and 2010. The brothers also embark upon occasional architectural projects, such as the Maison Flottante (“Floating House”) in 2006, the Kvadrat showrooms (Stockholm and Copenhagen) and the Dos Palillos restaurant at the Casa Camper Hotel in Berlin (2010).
Voted Designers of the Year at the Salon du Meuble in 2002, they have also received such awards as the City of Paris Grand Prix du Design (1998), the New Designer Award at New York’s International Contemporary Furniture Fair (1999) and the Finn-Juhl Prize (Copenhagen, 2008). Furthermore, their Facett collection produced with Ligne Roset and their Worknest desk chair both won the “Best of the Best” Red Dot Design Award, in 2005 and 2008 respectively.
Several monographic exhibitions have been devoted to their work, showcased at the Design Museum, London in 2002, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam, La Piscine Museum of Art and Industry in Roubaix, in 2004, Villa Noailles in Hyeres in 2008 and Grand Hornu, Belgium in 2009. Their designs form part of select international museums’ collections such as the Musée National d’Art Moderne – Centre Pompidou and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the London Design Museum and the Boijmans van
Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam.
In autumn 2011, the Centre Pompidou-Metz will exhibit the first major festival of its kind in France, dedicated to the work of Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec.
