Pop-Up Park at OpenHouse Gallery
Until January 30 '11
New York City
201 Mulberry Street
In the past months we have been bombarded with pop-up shops offering various 'design' minded gifts and trinkets for the holiday season. This month, however, the pop-up trend has taken a refreshing turn. The OpenHouse gallery has converted three and a half rooms into a indoor park with everything from bird songs, rocks, and a see-saw.
While the pop-up park offers a much needed refuge from wintery New York City, I can't help but find the artificial scene a bit haunting. The artificial trees, grass, rocks, and animal sounds are reminiscent of a theme-park; creating an idyllic setting where the winter environment can be ignored. Visitors can enjoy out of season fruits, imported from warmer regions of the world, while enjoying the recordings of animals and sitting on artificial rocks.
As long as we remember that New York City is full of parks that can be enjoyed at all seasons of the year, this pop-up offers an interesting place to enjoy friends, meet with the community, and escape the wintery city outside.
The space offers a range of curated events for visitors, including: yoga, movie nights, dinner parties, bocce ball, and croquet. It is free to the public and open daily from 11am-6pm.
