Pressed Chair by Harry Thaler
Designers to watch
A recent graduate of Design Products at the Royal College of Art, Harry Thaler received the Conran Award 2010 for his 'Pressed Chair' this past summer.
The chair is created by stamping into 2.5 mm aluminium; making an object that is light, stackable, portable, and 100% recyclable.
The simplicity of the manufacturing process can be read in the aesthetics of the chair; from observing the metal one can easily image how this chair is created. The desire to read into the process of designed objects may be attributed to the rise of DIY culture and the urge for many to create their own objects. While this chair allows for this curiosity, it also applies manufacturing processes and can source materials at a scale that can be much more sustainable than many DIY attempts.
With the 'Pressed Chair', Thaler reminds us of the role of the designer in thinking through process and creating something that is simple, both aesthetically and pragmatically, yet at the same time reflects the current cultural concerns of ecological thinking and do it yourself mentality.
UPDATE: Pressed Chair took ex-equo first prize in this year's international [D3] competition!
