Asif Khan
Designers to watch
Asif Khan is a multi disciplinary designer based in London. His work spans products, furniture, interiors and architecture. After training at The Bartlett and the Architectural Association School, he set up his studio in 2008 and has since enjoyed many high profile commissions.
In 2010, Khan was designer in residence at the Design Museum, producing 'Harvest', prototype furniture created from molding the fragile Gypsophila plant; the foliage was then freeze-dried and coated with a resin to give it strength and form. This has now lead to a collection being produced by Idée.
Other notable projects include a flexible sea side shelter, West Beach Cafe, Littlehampton, for which several furniture pieces were also developed; 'Tetra Light', a modular lighting design in collaboration with artist Peter Liversidge; a low cost public space shading canopy for a Brazillian Favela; 'Tip', a silver table centrepiece for Sawaya & Moroni; a sculptural mobile displayed on the catwalk for Osman Yousefzada Spring/Summer show 2009 as well as furniture designs 'BBchair', 'Foam Shell Chair' and 'Isomer table.'
This year he will be undertaking a new project for Design Miami; presenting new lighting and furniture at the Milan furniture fair; developing new products for Muji; working on designs for a restaurant in London’s Borough Food Market (collaborating with Paul Smith on the uniforms and chef Isaac McHale on the tableware) and creating a staircase made from a three-foot-diameter oak tree.
