After a grand opening earlier this week, the new extension to The Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome is now officially open and highly recommended for a visit.
Architecture practice Odile Decq Benoir Cornette won the commission in 2001, and have now unveiled a striking design which they hope will also be a flexible and inspiring space for visitors: “an intimate setting, a landscape where everything is made of folds, slopes, inclined glass roof, with refreshing water of the fountain, where trees soar up towards the sky.”
A scarlet auditorium itself has been painted with various textures, and the intensity of colour is further enhanced internally, with all 200 seats also coloured bright red.
The space surrounding the auditorium has bee painted in a matt black with black basalt flooring, absorbing the natural light streaming in from the glass roof and floor to ceiling windows on one side and creating further dramatic contrast.
In addition to an auditorium space within, this new extension extension provides two new exhibition spaces as well as a roof area to be used for temporary shows and events as well a terrace with a fountain and a restaurant.
