'Open Design' furniture

Designer Ronen Kadushin describes his latest collection of chairs entitled 'Recent Uploads' as "an upbeat design exploration into the opportunities Open Design presents".

The 'Recent Uploads' collection sits in a relatively new space for furniture design and production; existing as both open source entities and bespoke one off products signed by the designer available for purchase. There is also a contrasting mixture of practices used to create these pieces, utilising both handmade and mass production methods.

Each chair is made from laser cut 6mm aluminium sheets which is then bent and assembled by hand using a unique technique developed by Kadushin. The designs of the chairs have then been uploaded onto his website where the audience is invited to copy, produce or experiment with them under a Creative Commons licence.

Kadushin explains the process:
"In Open Design, the design is a two dimensional "cutout" represented as digital information. It relies on the Internet's communication resources, to publish, distribute, and copy... Coupled with the flexibility of CNC production methods, all technically conforming designs are continuously available for production, in any number, with no tooling investment, anywhere and by anyone."
