Pepe Heykoop
Designers to Watch
Having graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven in 2008, Pepe Heykoop jumped right into the global spotlight after being selected for Li Edelkoort's wishlist auction at Pierre Bergé & Associés September '09.
Heykoop has exhibited worldwide, catching my eye at various events. His designs offer a playful aesthetic that, at times, embraces the spontaneity of materials and process.
We see this in Heykoop's "liquid pillows" where liquid foam was dripped onto the chair then finished with a coating of black rubber. While the final object is stunning, I can't help but think that the focus on process is what really makes this piece standout amongst contemporary design. In creating this object, Heykoop embraced uncertainty, giving up his final say as a designer and allowing the material and the environment to shape the product.
In contrast to the black monochromatic "liquid pillows" his Brick series clearly reflect his playful approach. The bright colors and reference to childhood toys creates a sense of nostalgia while at the same time maintaining a contemporary aesthetic. This witty use of material once again reveals Heykoop's ability to bring together process and aesthetics to create unique contemporary objects.
