The Global Africa Project
17 November ’10 – 15 May ‘11
Museum of Art and Design
New York City, New York
In a unique exhibition, and possibly the first of its kind, the Museum of Art and Design present an exhibition celebrating contemporary African art, design, and craft worldwide. The exhibition will feature over 100 artists of African descent or those inspired by African art working across the world.
The Global African Project challenges the notice of a singular African aesthetic, and showcases the diversity and integration of African art and design. Interestingly, the show will not distinguish between professional and artisan artists.
This comprehensive exhibition is centered around various themes including intersection culture and cultural fusion, branding and co-opting of cultural references, use of local materials, and the impact of art-making on economic and social conditions of local communities, among others.
The Global African Project will challenge viewers to understand the conflict between creation and commodification of art production and the issues faced by artists in a rapidly changing global environment.
