London, UK
The shortlist of artists for the next commission to go on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square have been selected to produce a maquette of their proposed work to be exhibited in the crypt of St. Martin in the Fields, opening 19 August.
Artists included in the short list are Allora & Calzadilla, Elmgreen & Dragset, Katharina Fritsch, Brian Griffiths, Hew Locke and Mariele Neudecker. The winner, and selected artist, will be announced by the Mayor of London in early 2011, and their artwork will be installed once the current installation is taken down at the end of 2011.
Part of the significance of the Fourth Plinth program is its tendency to spark debate among the public about public art, and in this exhibition the public have an opportunity to comment on the short listed proposals and play a role in its selection.
In its ninth year, the Fourth Plinth Program will continue to deliver high quality contemporary art to millions of onlookers, while extending the discourse on public art.
