"Industrial Makeshift" by Simon Hasan

On July 23rd, as part of this year’s Blink Festival in Northampton, England, cutting-edge designer Simon Hasan will unveil his latest installation, “Industrial Makeshift”, which explores the intersecting themes commerce, craft and industry.

“Industrial Makeshift” was conceived in response to an invitation by Northampton Festival to create a site specific installation in the town’s 700 year-old Market Square. The installation features a customised vending machine stocked with 400 mass-produced, hand-crafted leather objects Hasan created using the medieval leather-working technique of Cuir Bouilli. The objects can be purchased in the usual coin-operated way of a conventional vending machine for only £3.

In this installation, Hasan questions the role of the handmade within the modern production system. The objects for sale within “Industrial Makeshift” are moulded on archetypes of mass-production such as cola bottles, but are carefully crafted to become curious artefacts with an individual and historical quality.

“Industrial Makeshift” will be on view from July 23rd to August 1st.
