Spun by Thomas Heathwick
31st March – 15th May ‘10
Haunch of Venison
Burlington Gardens, London
Now on view at Haunch of Venison in London is an exhibition of new work by Thomas Heatherwick. The show centers around ‘Spun’, an aptly named adaptation of the conventional chair that transforms the traditionally passive seat into the kinetic experience of a spinning top.
This is Heathwick’s second solo show at Haunch of Venison, and it includes five versions of the ‘Spun’ chair. Each version is entirely functional and formed from a single profile rotated through 360 degrees. The different ‘Spun’ chairs are made of mirror polished steel, brushed stainless steel, mirror polished copper, brushed copper and patinated with brushed seat copper.
The inspiration for the design came from the traditional craft of metal spinning, often used for the manufacturing of industrial parts, but rarely for the production of furniture.
‘Spun’ plays with typical notions of furniture, design, and function in a unique and innovative way. If you are in the London area, the exhibition is well worth a visit.
