The Tablet Computer: Chic, Charitable, or Both?

Everyone is buzzing about the tablet computer. From the latest developments by designer Yves Behar for his charitable project ‘One Laptop Per Child’ to Apple’s hyped and highly anticipated new ‘iSlate’ computer, the design community can’t seem to stop talking about these miniaturised pieces of technology.
In two recent articles, Andy Greenberg and Alice Rawsthorne examine this captivating techno trend from differing sides of the issue. In Greenberg’s article ‘The $75 Future Computer’, he focuses on the charitable possibilities of the tablet design discussing the XO-3 computer, which is the latest model machine from Yves Behar for the non-profit effort ‘One Laptop Per Child’ scheduled for release in 2012. Contrastingly, in Rawsthorne’s article ‘Impact of ‘iSlate’ Could Rival iPhone’ she focuses on the consumer capabilities of this design in the hands of global corporation Apple.
So is the future tablet computer chic or charitable? Ultimately it seems it has the possibility to be both.
