In Praise of Shadows
by Jane Withers for the Designer Observer
In this interesting article, Jane Withers discusses the ongoing debate surrounding the iconic Edison bulb. According to Withers, this lighting crisis should ‘go beyond geeky discussions about technologies and bulbs... [and] be a chance to explore new thinking... about the quality of light, and to challenge the modern obsession with brightness that has held sway for over a century.’
This article is an adaptation from the exhibition essay for “In Praise of Shadows: New European Lighting Design”, presented at the Victoria and Albert Museum this past Autumn. The exhibition was curated by Withers and showcased a variety of low-energy light sources and alternative energy forms alongside commentaries on traditional bulbs and fixtures.
Wither’s discussion offers an informative analysis of this controversial topic that should not be missed.
