Christie’s Sale of Important 20th Century Decorative Art & Design
8th December ’09, 10:30 am
Christie’s
Rockefeller Center, New York
On the 8th of December Christie’s in New York will hold its Winter sale of 20th Century Decorative Art and Design. The selection on offer is overwhelmingly focused on pieces from the early and mid-20th century, with only 3 out of the 161 lots up for grabs by contemporary designers.
These are Zaha Hadid’s polyester resin ‘Serif 2’ shelf from the Seamless Collection (estimate $10,000 - $15,000), Marc Newson’s ‘Voronoi’ shelf (estimate $150,000-$200,000), and one of the Campana Brothers’ stuffed toy animal ‘Mixed Banquette’ chairs (estimate $20,000 - $30,000).
All in all, this sale seems to be a prime example of what has been the increasing trend in design and fine art auctions recently: to play in safe with big names and pieces with already established historical value. It will be interesting to see how these contemporary pieces fair on the 8th.
