New light-works
by Marcus Tremonto
Marcus Tremonto maintains his signature sense of mystery and illusion in his new collection of light-works for Patrick Brillet of the Apartment Gallery, London.
Building on the architectural perspective of his Paper Landscape Series, which was first exhibited during the 2009 Milan Design Week, these new works by Tremonto explore the continuing use of the light source as a material to express form and shape, while utilizing new techniques and manufacturing processes.
Each piece in the series is a double-sided light image nearly 2-3mm thick. Drawing on pop themes and minimalist shapes these new works play with notions of form and design in innovative and intriguing ways. The work titled “Vakpak” was inspired by vacuum packed products and allows the servient packing material to become an integral element in the design of the light itself, and in so doing creates a surrealist-like illusion of a two-dimensional Edison bulb. Another piece in the series “Whole Light” offers not only a play on words but a play on our notion of the traditional light bulb. With a literal hole in the centre of the object, where one might expect to find the source of light, this work reverses our expectations in a seemingly marvellous fashion.
The pieces in this collection are elegantly simple and full of poignant whit. They will be on view from the 15th-18th October, 2009 at Belgrave Square London, as part of the Super Design exhibition.
