During this year’s London Design Festival, Spring Projects presents “American Chateau Room One” a new commission by Jaime Hayon and Neinke Klunder. Hayon and Klunder have been collaborating since 2003 but the works shown in this exhibition mark a departure for both artists.
Drawing on the influence of the iconic cultural exports of the USA and the opulence of 17th century European craftwork, Klunder and Hayon have created a series of functional and non-functional works.
At first glance the pieces look like custom-made works for a palace from the 17th century, but on closer examination it becomes clear these objects are not as we would expect. The pieces are a fusion of two worlds, contradicting and complimenting each other at the same time. Hayon and Klunder’s pieces are the icons of the booming, fast-food American dream, a kind of Versailles meets Disneyland hybrid. They blur the line between high and low culture and challenge the elite notions of art and design by giving their pieces a frame of reference in contemporary everyday culture.
