The Results Are In: Pierre Bergé & Associés Wish List- Li Edelkoort Auction
16th September ’09
Although Sunday’s ambitious auction broke no records it did offer a fresh new approach to the contemporary design auction.
With the majority of the unique and limited-edition works up for grabs coming from a select group of emerging designers – each hand picked by internationally acclaimed trend forecaster Li Edelkoort – the sale was a brave move for a bourgeoning auction house clearly on its way to establishing itself as a key player in the futures of collectible design.
The top earner from Sunday’s sale was GRO Design’s unique “Eleven - the beautiful game” 2009, selling for €48,000 (Pre-sale estimate €50,000 - 70,000).
Additional highlights included the limited edition ‘Multidao’ chair by Fernando and Humberto Campana, 2002, which sold for its high estimate of €30,000, and a prototype ‘The Woods Chair’ by Karen Ryan which soared past its pre-sale estimate of €800 - 1,200 selling for €5,500.
A number of quality works by young designers such as Ineke Hans, Pepe Heykoop, Nacho Carbonell and Vincent Geraedts sold either within or above their pre-auction estimates, proving that this side of the market is worth keeping an eye one.
However, with over half of the available lots going unsold it is clear that the market continues to play it safe, opting for realistic prices and personal preference over conceptual value and future trends.
