Pioneers of Change
11th - 20th September ’09
Various venues across Nolan Park
Governors Island, New York
To commemorate the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the Dutch to New York, NY400 Week / Holland on the Hudson presents Pioneers of Change, a festival of Dutch design, fashion, and architecture on New York Island.
Over the course of two long weekends the festival will showcase a modern interpretation of Dutch art and design. While highlighting a more responsible approach to living, Pioneers of Change celebrates the blurring of low-and high brow, while emphasising the importance of sustainability and valuing handcraft and the local context.
Visitors are invited to listen and debate, watch and participate, relax and think, eat and drink, be inspired and simply enjoy the myriad of exhibitions and events including ‘repair vs. recycling’ the ‘Go Slow café’ , ‘100 dollars and less Pop-Up Store of Dutch design’ and the big kick-off with Open Talks – the topics: “Toward a New Notion of Luxury” and “New Collaborations”
.
Emphasising the importance of space, fresh air, respect, care, silence, slowness and time, the festival features a variety of work from a number of leading designers driven by this notion of luxury. These include, but are not limited to, Atelier NL, Maarten Baas, Droog, Christien Meindertsma, Richard Hutten and Atelier van Lieschout.
