Second Lives - Remixing the Ordinary
27th September '08 - 15th February '09
Museum of Arts and Design
2 Columbus Circle, New York, NY
The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), has officially opened its doors to the public in its new location on Columbus Circle.
To celebrate its dedication to materials and processes across the three fields of art, design and craft the museum has chosen “Second Lives - Remixing the Ordinary” as the inaugural exhibition for its grand opening.
Confirming the museum’s ambition to disregard the hierarchies among the three disciplines, “Second Lives” offers a solid argument supporting the notion of the thoroughly blurred boundary dividing art, craft and design.
Featuring work by 50 international established and emerging designers and artists who create objects and installations comprised of ordinary and everyday manufactured articles, the exhibition examines the ways in which makers transform our world, respond to contemporary cultural paradigms, and comment on global consumerism.
The exhibition includes works by well known designers, Ingo Maurer, Tejo Remy, Piet Hein Eek and the Campana Brothers as well as internationally acclaimed artists, such as Tara Donovan, Xu Bing, El Anatsui, and Do Ho Suh.
Highlights from the show include Korean artist Do Ho Suh’s ‘Metal Jacket’ made of military dog tags, portraying the way a solider is part of a larger troop, British designer Stuart Haygarth’s spectacle chandelier made from prescription glasses and American Johnny Swing’s couch made from welded Quarter dollars.
Second Lives continues through February 15th.
