DLA Vessels
David Sutton
These vessels are formed through a process called Diffusion Limited Aggregation (DLA) which has been modelled in a virtual environment.
DLA is usually studied as an example of fractal growth processes such as branching, lightning, snowflakes, mineral deposits, and coral. Here, the basic principles have been used to create simulated models of root systems.
The growth of the 3-dimensional structures is contained within a set of virtual surfaces which is used to shape the structure into its end form. The structures forming the vessels shown here are grown within the ‘virtual’ wall section of the vessel and are then brought into reality through rapid manufacturing processes.
Developed in conjunction with 3D Systems.
