Sudeley Castle
A perfect day out
On a warm summer's day, we headed to Sudeley Castle in Winchcombe, Gloucestershire to see the sculptures and installations on display as part of the 'Reconstruction #3, Artists' Playground' exhibition. The selling exhibition, organized in partnership with Phillips de Pury & Company, is based on the theme of play - good enough reason for us to hop-skip out of London for the day.
Exhibition aside, this is a place that can boast over 1000 years of history, not least that the Castle was once home to Queen Katherine Parr, the last and only surviving wife of Henry VIII. After a long period of neglect, the Castle and its grounds were lovingly restored and can now be visited by the public daily between March and October.
Most of the Castle itself is closed to the public but it is the gardens that you are here to enjoy. Old roses and clematis are aplenty, studded and framed by well-tendered blocks of topiary yews and boxwood. Visit before the end of October and you will encounter the various sculptures dotted across the grounds, created by a wealth of international artists and designers including Zaha Hadid, Arik Levy, and Richard Woods.
We can't recommend a visit to Sudeley Castle enough - a blissful day-trip with friends on a sunny day.
