Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec Rêveries Urbaines at Vitra Design Museum
08 October '16 - 02 February '17
Following their exhibition »Album« in 2012, internationally renowned designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec return to the Vitra Campus in October 2016. The exhibition »Rêveries Urbaines« at the Zaha Hadid Fire Station presents concepts for urban development, and is a wide-ranging study of possible development solutions for cities that may be imagined in very different urban settings. Like a large open sketchbook, the proposed solutions are presented as a gentle walk through models and animations.
The exhibition is designed to be immersive and to bear the visitor away into different scenarios, with each model showcased as a chapter in an urban fiction. »Rêveries Urbaines« features Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec’s first projects that concentrate on public spaces. Films and research models are arranged around fourteen proposals that re-invent certain motifs for urban spaces: vines, torches, parasols, a fountain, a kiosk etc. The aim is to give a new sense of magic to the places where we walk, meet, and talk, by the use of lines, harmony and transparency. The installation points to some of the ongoing projects the brothers are developing for several cities around the world.
Ronan (born 1971) and Erwan Bouroullec (born 1976) are brothers and designers. Their studio is based in Paris, and their team includes around six people. For fifteen years, they have been working together, bonded by diligence and challenged by their distinct personalities.
Their work covers a wide range of disciplines, from jewelry design, spatial arrangements to architecture. It features craftsmanship and production on an industrial scale, as well as drawings, video and photography. The designers also maintain their experimental activity with Galerie kreo, which is essential to the development of their work. Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec’s pieces are part of international museums’ permanent collections such as the Musée National d’Art Moderne – Centre Pompidou and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Design Museum in London, and the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
