Astrid Krogh: "Remembering Landscapes" at Galerie Maria Wettergren
through 26 May '16
"It is an early summer morning. I am camping with my kids on a beach. It’s a stretch we consider our own. Quite desolated in a primordial kind of way. The trees are reaching almost to the water’s edge, ramsons are growing up the slope nearby. Wakening up, I wonder if the sun is rising. The birds are about to waken. I get out of the tent. Heavy clouds are scattered on the dark sky. On the horizon lies a tiny flash of light. Here comes the sun. The next 20 minutes nature is presenting a drama of colors I have never seen before, nor ever since."
(Astrid Krogh in Flux Luminous, Astrid Krogh's forthcoming book which will be published in summer 2016)
The lingua franca in Krogh’s world describes the feelings evoked by the beauty of the dawn, and the emotions stirred when the sunset streaks extraordinary colours across the sky. Her vocabulary is nuanced by sensory experiences, which are articulated through a lexicon of colour and light… Krogh’s ability to speak the language of light reveals her mastery of the classic syntax of colour, shadow and form. This syntax has been articulated by painters for centuries, through the work of masters such as Turner, Constable and Eckersberg, and more recently by contemporary artists such as James Turrell, Dan Flavin and Olafur Eliasson.
