The POC21 Innovation Camp at Millemont Castle

Starting August 15th, POC21 innovation camp will bring together 100+ citizen pioneers to join forces at Millemont Castle near Paris. During five weeks of co-making and co-living, their goal will be to prototype a new breed of open-source, sustainable products. Among the 12 projects now selected are a 30$ wind turbine made from recycled materials, a kitchen reinvented for food and energy autonomy, and a filtration system to shower as long as you want with minimal impact on the environment.
Ahead of the UN climate summit COP21, organizers OuiShare (Paris) and Open State (Berlin) want to deliver the proof of concept that a fossil-free, resource-efficient society can be built by citizen pioneers. Hosted in a 16th century French castle, the 12 project teams - supported by international makers, designers and social innovators - will develop and document their ideas for a mainstream audience. During POC21 the participants will em brace a unique creative process complete with mentoring sessions, work sprints, reality checks, campfire chats and more.
The key to globalize the outcomes of POC21 is to make them open-source, labelled as “product blueprints” shared freely on the web. “We want to demonstrate how open source and the maker movement can enable an econo- my based on low-cost, long-lasting and resource-efficient products; open to copy, share and modify”, explains POC21 co-founder Benjamin Tincq. “Our concept is build on the idea of the 3rd Industrial Revolution: Source files are shared freely without patents, R&D is mutualized globally, manufacturing is being re-localized, and the barriers to building your own products are falling apart“.
The French-German collaboration is backed by powerful partners that will support the widespread adoption of camp outcomes, among them the KR Foundation (Denmark), software company Autodesk (USA), home improve- ment retailer Castorama-Kingfisher (France/UK), the Région Ile-De-France, Fraunhofer Institute ISI (Germany), or the Institute of Advanced Architec- ture of Catalunya (Spain).
