Blackman Cruz Design Auction at Wright
21 April '15
Wright presents Blackman Cruz, a special auction organized in collaboration with the renowned Los Angeles dealers. Comprised of furniture, design and objects selected specifically for this sale, Blackman Cruz includes alluring and exquisite works characteristic of their selective and inquisitive eye.
Composed of a wide-ranging assortment of good design, from antiques to their own contemporary productions, the auction collection is united by their distinct aesthetic sensibility celebrating the virtues of drama, humor, ingenuity, and sculptural boldness. Highlights include a granite Sphinx by the sculptor David Edstrom that exhibited at the Panama Pacific Exposition of San Francisco in 1915 and a pair of gnarled wood and root lounge chairs from Al Capone’s hideout in Wisconsin. A 1951 Bianchi Motorcycle, an iron studded two-door safe and a 1952 glass mosaic cityscape mural from the Petroleum Club of the Statler Hotel in Los Angeles are also among the top lots in the sale. Designers from around the world such as Josef Hoffmann, Carlo Bugatti, Andre Sornay, Paolo de Poli and Arturo Pani are represented in this alluring collection.
Works from Blackman Cruz will be presented in exhibitions designed by Adam Blackman and David Cruz at Wright’s New York gallery and in Los Angeles at Blackman Cruz with opening receptions in both cities on April 2 and April 9 respectively.
