Scandinavian Design Auction at Wright
14 November '13
Chicago
A rich selection of more than three hundred works by designers from Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland is expected to be auctioned on 14th November. Wright, Chicago will deliver an outstanding organic of designs which, according to the auction house specialist Peter Jefferson, is unprecedented on the market.
The selection comprises an important collection of sophisticated weavings and carpets from the renowned textile workshop Marta Maas-Fjetterstrom.
Amongst these, Barbro Nilsson’s Carnations carpet is exemplary of the most exquisitely crafted pieces (estimate: $40,000-60,000). Measuring 12 x 14 feet, this work is one of the finest mid-century Scandinavian carpets to be presented.
Lighting designs by Paavo Tynell such as a star-studded blue enamel steel and frosted glass chandelier (estimate: $5,000-7,000) and a table lamp with a brass shell-shaped shade (estimate: $3,000-5,000) will appear among the lots, as well as several chairs dating from the 1930s to the 1950s.
Interesting within the latter category are Hans Wegner’s few seatings, as well as the presence of iconic pieces from Arne Jacobsen (Egg, Sevener and Swan chairs) and Alvar Aalto, which will satisfy a classic audience.
A rare armchair of leather and mahogany by Frits Henningsen (estimate: $30,000-40,000) and a Mix lounge chair, model 4396, designed by Kaare Klint (estimate: $10,000-15,000) are especially outstanding.
Other most loved works featured in Chicago will be glass and silver objects by Tapio Wirkkala and works by Finn Juhl, Josef Frank, Grete Jalk and more.
Tableware designs will be presented by names such as Herbert Krenchel, Johan Rohde, Piet Hein, Henning Koppel and Arne Jacobsen himself.
