'Shadows' by Paul Philip at Hedge Gallery
27 September — 2 November '13
San Francisco
From 27 September — 2 November 2013 Hedge will host the exhibition, Shadows by Welsh potter Paul Philp featuring 30 works, some of which have been released from the artist’s personal reserve and are being exhibited for the first time.
Inspired by a simple life and working in his studio, philp continues to refine his zen approach to pottery, building elegant vessels that combine clay and impurities to achieve richly textured surfaces. After more than 50 years of making ceramics philp still draws on antiquity and Japanese and African culture. The often eroded surfaces of his hand built vessels look as though they have been excavated from ancient ruins- primal and time worn yet with a refined sense of hand. Classic forms in a restrained palette suggest subtle shadows of light and dark, solid and void.
“The idea and philosophy behind my work is to produce objects that look as if they have happened, as if by a natural process - objects that have been discovered rather than made. Nature does such wonderful things with materials.”
