Lost Quarters: Southwark South Bank and Guy's Hospital Design Workshop
10th July '08, 1pm- 5pm
10 Keyworth Studios, 7th Floor, Keyworth Studios,
London South Bank University
This is the second part of two workshops with top designers/developers unveiling transformational ideas for neglected areas of London.
This workshop will look at how Guy’s can be rethought to improve local urban design issues - what sort of a place it might become with new uses incorporated and better links established with the surrounding townscape - encouraging better integration and more public use.
An exciting brief urges teams to debate the future opportunities of the Guy's Hospital site - surrounded as it is by the phenomena of Borough Market to the west, the new and growing magnet of More London to the North, the expected arrival of the new London Bridge opening onto the site and arrival of the Shard as a neighbour.
All of this, amid the ongoing, escalating debate over future provision of health makes the challenge of the future of this part of the city a rich and rewarding seam of architectural and urban design investigation. It also begs the question of what Southwark is contemplating as local planning authority and what the local community thinks.
The teams’ ideas will be unveiled in a public ‘critique’ featuring expert commentators and a public Q&A session, details of which can be found at www.lfa2008.org
