Scrap Chairs
Jonathan Junker + Seth Grizzle of Graypants
Seattle-based Graypants have taken the cradle to cradle mantra to heart. By creating elegant pieces of sustainable furniture, from what most consider the refuse of our day to day lives, they have truly put into motion this idea of waste=food.
“Designed around a truly sustainable process, our Scrap Chairs represent a concept. A step ahead of recycling or salvaging used materials, these chairs express the idea that products must be designed to provide new life at the end of their own.
So, we pillaged cardboard from overflowing dumpsters, dusted off piles of amassed newspapers, collected wood slip sheets off pallets arriving from China, and gleefully accepted beautiful scraps of plywood that were begging for a home. Then, we made chairs. We let everything influence everything. The cardboard chair became the mold for a paper mâché version, which slumped slightly into a shape we quite liked. Layering the rigid pallet sheets, we decided the plywood chair could become one of the softest. Constructing the chairs, unexpected designs for light fixtures and accessories began to emerge.
Scrap Chairs are a healthy reminder that it takes a great challenge to produce a meaningful solution. Before tossing that overabundance of junk mail, ponder the options. The results might surprise you. Waste can equal food.” Graypants
