The Schildbach Xylotheque by Mark Dion
dOCUMENTA (13)
Kassel
As dOCUMENTA (13) comes to an end of its 100 day exhibition, we have chosen a selection of works to highlight on DeTnk. First is American artist Mark Dion's Xylotheque which highlights the work of Carl Schildbach from 1771 to 1799 to create 530 'books' made from 441 tree and shrub species local to Kassel.
From the exhibition:
For dOCUMENTA (13), Mark Dion has designed a new display for these extraordinary artefacts, intended to emphasise their significance and to permanently increase their visibilitiy. Dion... adopts the Xylotheque as a kind of readymade within his own installation, to which he adds six new books. Five of these present a specific wood from one of the five continents missing from Schildback's collection, symbolically completing its encyclopedic endeavour. The sixth book is made from oak [referring to Joseph's Beuys' planting of 7,000 oaks in Kassel from 1982 to 1987 for documenta 7 and 8]
dOcumenta (13) runs until September 16 '12 in Kassel, Germany. For more information visit http://d13.documenta.de.
