'Addressing the Need: The Graphic Design of the Eames Office' at PM Gallery
14 September – 3 November '12
London
Husband-and-wife team Charles and Ray Eames were among the most important designers of the 20th century; world famous and still celebrated for their pioneering furniture, they embraced a way of living and thinking that continues to resonate with today’s generation.
Less well known than their furniture, but also deeply influential, is their graphic design, film, photography, and exhibition work, which emanated from the Eames Office in Venice, California. Addressing the Need: The Graphic Design of the Eames Office explores these areas of the Eames catalogue with displays of advertising, packaging, film and photography, much of which is rarely seen or has never before been on view for the public.
Among the Eames Office objects to be exhibited are advertisements, announcements, invitations, brochures, pamphlets, booklets, posters and timelines interspersed with furniture, films and toys. In addition, layout materials illustrate the Eames design process.
