Frank Gehry's set for LA Philharmonic performance of Mozart’s Don Giovanni
Los Angeles
Frank Gehry has been commissioned to design the set for the LA Philharmonic's performance of Don Giovanni. The show itself takes place in the Walt Disney Concert hall, a building designed by Gehry - giving architecture fans a chance to be submersed in Frank Gehry's style.
Creating a set within the Walk Disney Concert Hall proved to be a challenging project as the hall was built as a symphonic venue, meaning it doesn’t have the elements of a typical theatre stage – no curtain, orchestra pit, wings or fly loft (rigging system).
Gehry and co-designers, sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy of fashion label Rodarte, needed to ensure the theatrical performance could flow seamlessly in such a space. To do so they used 80 rolls of paper creating creating a space to frame the action and also separate actors from the orchestra (which sits on a plane elevated about 1m at the back of the stage).
