Serpentine Gallery Pavillion 2008
20th July - 19th October '08
The Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2008 has officially opened its doors to the public.
The spectacular structure - designed and engineered in collaboration with Arup - is England’s first built project by legendary architect Frank Gehry.
Taking inspiration from a fascinating variety of sources ranging from the elaborate wooden catapults designed by Leonardo da Vinci, to the wings of a butterfly, Gehry has created a transformative place for reflection and relaxation by day, and discussion and performance by night.
This year’s pavilion is part of the Serpentine Gallery’s ongoing programme of temporary structures by internationally renowned architects. Central to the Gallery’s thinking is the ambition to create a dynamic programme that introduces contemporary architects to a wider audience. This is achieved through built structures rather than the more traditional gallery approach of showcasing models, drawings and images.
The Pavilion will house Park Nights, a programme of events that will include talks, performances, music and film screenings.
