Future Folk at New Designers
July 6 - 9 '11
Business Design Centre
London
Part two of New Designers opens today, providing a second chance to see the graduates of the acclaimed Goldsmiths Design BA, presenting a selection from their show earlier in year 'Future Folk'.
Part two of graduate showcase presents work in Product, Furniture and Spatial Design as well as Visual Communications (including Graphic Design & Illustration). 'Future Folk' was first shown in full at The Nicholls & Clarke Building, Shoreditch from May 30 - June 2 '11, and if you missed it the first time round, a visit to their stand at New Designers is highly recommended.
The multi disciplinary and conceptually lead Goldsmiths approach is complimented by a strong relationship with professional design studios. Students regularly work with (and then for, on graduation) companies such as Imagination, Pentagram, Droog, Studio Mariscal, Atelier van Lieshout, Denis Santachiara and Thomas Heatherwick Studio. Each year, this mixture consistently produces degree shows which are among the most diverse, experimental and thoughtful; and this one is no different.
The title of this years show communicates the focus; a nod to the designers role in creating and defining the future, counterbalanced with a design practice with is situated in the 'real', and in the everyday, rather than in pure speculation.
Notable projects include; a charming mechanical drawing machine to capture portraits of people on public transport by Hannah Thompson as part of 'What are you looking at'; 'Ink Stained Verses', a chromatography based clock that explores perception of time without numbers by Rosann Ling; an architectural re-imagining of areas which today are too hostile to inhabit as they are dominated by gale force winds, into a future where the wind is embraced and shapes everyday life in Jeremy Brown's 'The Windy City'; while Sophie Start's project 'The Idea of Nature' explores the designers role as curator of perceptions of the natural world.
More projects from 'Future Folk' can be seen on the show website.
