Material Table by Adjaye Associates
12th May - 9th July '11
Aram Gallery
London
Material Table lays bare and presents a table of materials across a range of Adjaye Associates’ projects.
In this extensive library, materials are divided and ordered according to their types, quality and property; texture, porous, hard and so on; all vital and mandatory considerations for the architect’s design method.
Correlating to a periodic table, the exhibition presents the concept and approach of Adjaye Associates as they relate materials to projects and the natural environment they are surrounded by.
'Material Table' is as much about the power of imagination as it is about cultural, economic and psychological implications. Adjaye’s material sample library, transported as one directly from their office, is a rare opportunity for insight into this creative architectural practice through one of its most emotive tools.
The work that goes into the practice of architecture is often far away from the public eye, hard to understand and difficult to explain. 'Material Table' is an attempt to let audiences experience at first hand one of the critical moments in the process and, in particular, to enjoy the open richness and respect in which Adjaye Associates uses materials in its architecture.
Daniel Charny, Guest Curator, “Material Table”
The exhibition offers a unique perspective of project materiality and composition – the significance and relationship of which is often concealed or overlooked by the observer. This visual presentation provides an alternative insight to architects’ drawings and sketches.
