Noho Design District 2011

Noho Design District 2011

13 - 16 May '11

New York City

The Noho Design District is New York City’s newest design destination, produced and curated by Sight Unseen annually to coincide with the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF).

After a successful pilot year in 2010, the Noho Design District has swiftly become New York Design Week’s most exciting incubator for new ideas and emerging talents — a dynamic destination for those attending the fair at the Javits, centered in a neighborhood that is already considered a hub for design and creativity.

Events Include:

Areaware: The Bow Bins

The New York-based design label Areaware hosts an installation of its newest product: The whimsical Bow Bin waste baskets created by German designer Cordula Kehrer. A study in contradiction, they’re produced by the indigenous Aeta of the Philippines via the fair trade NGO Preda.

New Work At Shimna

The eco-conscious furniture label will launch a glueless credenza, a Shaker-inspired bench, and a coffee table that pays homage to Mr. Rogers — plus a new in-house contract-furniture brand called Meristem.

325 Lafayette, 212-529-6616
Friday May 13, Saturday May 14, and Monday May 16 11AM to 7PM; Sunday May 15 12PM to 6PM

Uhuru: War Craft

Uhuru is pleased to announce the launch of its third “local materials” line, constructed from reclaimed wood taken from the deck of the decommissioned USS North Carolina, one of the most decorated battleships in U.S. naval history. The series consists of six limited-edition pieces, and Uhuru will produce only ten of each design due to the finite availability of the decking.

Knot Yet By Takeshi Miyakawa at BondToo

At this design office run by Josee Lepage, Brooklyn-based designer Takeshi Miyakawa will present an installation of rectangular acrylic LED lights that cantilever vertically and horizontally, creating a seemingly weightless form.

Nightwood at Zero + Maria Cornejo

Brooklyn-based designers and makers Nightwood will be showing their Primitive line of salvaged wood furniture and naturally dyed, hand-painted textiles. The installation features an exotic combination of primal and modern shapes with a rustic sensibility, and includes the Nomad chair, Neptune chair, Mystic coffee table, and a series of new textiles.

Omer Arbel at the Downtown Auto Centre

The American Design Club Presents: Use Me

For its sixth show since its founding in 2008, the American Design Club presents “Use Me”: an exhibition by 45 young American designers of unapologetically functional objects, each of which exhibits a strong sense of purpose, intelligent use of materials, and the ability to do one thing extremely well.
