Auction Results: 20th Century Decorative Art & Design at Christie's
20 April '11
Christie's
London
On April 20th Christie's London hosted their second 20th century decorative art and design sale of 2011. The sale brought in a total of £990,675 from a total of 107 lots attributed to specific designers*.
With only 60.75% of the lots selling, this auction marks the lowest percentage of lots sold of the auctions DeTnk has analysed so far in 2011.
Of the 65 lots that sold, 42 reached a price that was above their estimated value. Even with this large percentage selling above estimated value, the sale total was 27.69% under the £1,370,000 average estimated value.
Below, we have compiled the list of DeTnk's top 10 designers from the sale. The ranking takes into account the value, volume and percentage bought-in of each designer's total sales.
The top 10 reveal the continued trend for collectors to continue to buy safe. 9 out of the 10 top designers sold 100% of their lots at an average of 84.51% above estimated values.
We are seeing that collectors are still buying and are competing for the top designers, however with the large percentage of bought in lots it seems they are not expanding their 'stable' of designers. It will be important for the future development of the collectible design market for collectors to continue to expand their collections, hopefully we will see an improvement in future sales.

*The auction overall total was £1,797,875 - however we are analysing only lots attributed to specific designers.
