Milan Design Map 2011
As the design world takes over Milan, we have compiled a list of must see shows, restaurants and showrooms.
If you have little time to spend in Milan over the week, head to the centre where you will find large show rooms from design manufacturers such as Cassina, Meritalia, and B&B Italia.
While this area is densely populated with design offerings this week, it can sometime feel a bit too familiar; often populated by 'safe' designs that have, or will, make their way around the global design scene.
For a more adventurous visitor looking for the youthful pulse of the design community head to Ventura Lambrate.
Here you will find a village of young emerging talents eager to explain their new design concepts. While this area has been curated by the staff of Ventura Lamrate, it can sometimes feel like a stroll through a crafts market. Don't let your guard down however, because it is here where you will find inspiration from a curious set of experimental designs.
While in Lamrate make sure to check out Poetry Happens Made in Berlin a group show that emphasizes the experimental ‘making’-oriented cultural path of design. A wonderful group of designers exploring the intersection of culture and design.
If you have a little more time, head over to Hermès where, for the first time in the Salone del Mobile in Milan, they are presenting a home collection in a space conceived by Shigeru Ban and Jean de Gastines. The show features wallpapers, furniture, carpets, and textiles.
End your nights at Bar Basso as it is the main night spot of the Milan fair and the best place to meet members of the design community for after party and event drinks.
As always, feel free to add your suggestions in comments below.
