Ehrlich Architects Win International Design Competition
for the United Arab Emirates Federal National Council’s New Parliament Building
Ehrlich Architects, a firm from Los Angeles, were selected above industry all stars Foster + Partners, Massimiliano Fuksas Architects, and Zaha Hadid Architects to design the United Arab Emirates future parliament building.
The building is located on Abu Dhabi Corniche, a grand boulevard in the country's capitol where important events and processions take place. Facing the Arabian Gulf, the building looks out to the body of water that is shared by six of the seven Emirates.
The design of the new parliament building fuses traditional Arabic design with contemporary technologies. The large dome screen, with its intricate designs, casts shadows throughout the complex; both functional, as it cools the space from the scorching sun, and aesthetic.
“The New Parliament Building Complex will balance Islamic Heritage with U.A.E.’s global contemporary aspirations, where modernity and tradition are in harmonious balance,” explains Ehrlich Architects’ Design Principal, Steven Ehrlich, FAIA, RIBA. “The architecture for the FNC’s new home will communicate its increasingly vital role in the lives of all United Arab Emirates citizens.”
