Spigoli Vivi
Designers to watch
Spigoli Vivi, which translates from the Italian as 'Sharp Edges' is a young design partnership, created in 2009, consisting of Leonardo Fortino and Andrea Bartolucci. The pair met at the faculty of industrial design in Rome 'La Sapienza' and finding they shared common design interests such as clean lines with a hint of playful curiosity, they joined together and have since completed 7 works as a partnership.
Pieces tend be practical items in a clean sleek style but with a twist in how they operate. These include 'Helios Chair' ; a hybrid chair for small spaces that combines a chair, a night table and a light, inspired by the misuse of a chair as a bedside table or vice versa.
The designers describe it as; "The result of an attempt to develop a product 'combo'; created both from the improper use of a chair and from the need to have a chair that is at the same time a bedside table. A 'bricolage' operation meant only as design technique. A product made entirely in wood, according to criteria of eco-sustainability, tradition and design simplicity."
However, they do not only create furniture, other pieces include a home composting ornament 'Jarst', contrasting lighting designs 'Karma' and 'Stick', abstracted clock 'Tink', and 'Revo' which uses magnetized iron filings to create a dynamic display.
Spigoli Vivi say that they want to find shapes that stimulate curiosity and encourage interaction. Aesthetically they embrace simple lines, without losing directness and warmth.
