Kei Ito: Sitting the Light Fantastic

Geffrye Museum
London
Kei Ito has created a new commission for The Geffrye Museum, as part of 'Museumaker', a prestigious national project, involving sixteen cultural institutions, which aims to unlock the creative potential of collections; through interchanges between museums and contemporary design and craft.
For the commission Kei Ito has created a centre piece for the front gardens of the Museum. The museum itself, set in Grade I listed 18th century almshouses, explores the home of the English urban middle classes over the past 400 years.
To reflect the Museum’s themes, and inspired by the global cultural influences that have shaped English furniture, ornaments and textiles, Ito has designed a lighting based installation on either side of the main path. It is designed not only to be visible from the busy road that runs to the front of the museum but also to bring the textures of the collection outside.
Museumaker describes the piece as "an ethereal parade of chairs, lamps and bird boxes... Larger than life, they will be made from woven fibre optics and, from dusk, their glow will create a sense of ghostly magic on Autumn and Winter afternoons."
