Design Auction at Palais Dorotheum
November 23 '10
Vienna
On November 23 '10 Palais Dorotheum will be hosting an auction of modern and contemporary design. Included in the 323 lots are a series of prototypes and rare collectables.
DeTnk recommends watching the "Queen Anne" chair designed by Robert Venturi in 1984 for Knoll International. The "Queen Anne“ chair was produced between 1984 and 1988 and rarely appears in this colour, it is estimated at €2,400 - €2,800
In addition to this rare find, the auction is also listing a "Big Easy Mild" chair prototype designed by Ron Arad in 1998. This prototype is No. 4 out of 5 of the artist proofs. In recent auctions the final version of this chair has sold for £94,100, three times the estimated value. With this artist proof estimated at €45,000 - to €55,000, it will be interesting to see how bidders react.
Another prototype on auction is the "Stacking Chair" designed by Günther Domenig in 1968 estimated at €5,000- €5,500. Once again this is a rare opportunity to collect an example of the design process.
Lastly, I would like to highlight a rare chance to bid on an early "Rood Blauwe Stoel“ armchair,
designed by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld. Estimated at €40,000 - €45,000, this white lacquered chair was created pre 1923 when the chair began to be painted in the programmatic De Stijl colours of red, blue, yellow, and black. This lot is an early iteration, rare to come to auction, of this iconic design.
