The Picture of Modernism in Japan

Photographer Ishimoto Yashiro will be featured in a new exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston opening June 30.

The exhibition titled 'Katsura: Picturing Modernism in Japanese Architecture' will present specific works by Yashiro that focus on the iconic structure and Bauhaus aesthetic of the 17th century Imperial villa, Katsura, in Kyoto. The 70 photographs on view will be exhibited for the first time un-cropped, and unaltered as Yashiro envisaged them.

These images explore how tradition can define modernity, and further the relationship between architecture and photography.
