Phillips de Pury Wants to Make a Big Splash
Article by Carol Vogel for the New York Times
In this recent article for the New York Times, Carol Vogel discusses Phillips de Pury & Company’s plans to open a new 25,000-square-foot exhibition space in New York City this autumn.
Phillips de Pury has joined forces with the former head of Christie's contemporary art department and private dealer Philippe Ségalot to develop an initiative where Phillips will invite collectors, dealers, artists and museum curators to put together their own individual sales at this new location.
Mr. de Pury explains that this new initiative will focus on contemporary art, but it could also feature design objects, describing it by saying, "It's like having a guest curator at a museum." This unique approach to estate and individual sales might, therefore, be the beginning of a new interaction between contemporary art and design. It may further make the auction market seem less austere with such a close collaboration between the individual and the auction house.
Mr. Ségalot's sale will take place in November. It may be a singular event or a piece of Phillip’s evening contemporary art sale, but either way it promises to shake things up in the auction market.
