THE RESULTS ARE IN: Phillips de Pury Design Auction
28 April '10
Phillips de Pury & Company
London
Phillips de Pury & Company's latest Design sale took place the 28th of April in London and ended with good results. Design sales give collectors an opportunity to focus their purchases on some of the best design pieces on the market.
Over all 112 lots were sold out of the 167 available, bring in a total of £1,822,075 including the buyers premium. This total shows the design market steadily hanging on in times of recession and its steady improvement over the last year.
Many of these lots went well above their estimates and the atmosphere was optimistic. Included among these was one of the top earners of the sale Lot 153, Poul Henningsen, Exceptional large wall light, for the Concert Hall, Scala Theater, 1955. The lot was estimated at £15,000 - £20,000 and sold for an incredible £70,850.
Oher highlights included Paul Evan's Dining Table, 1970s which sold for £58,850 with an estimate of £20,000 - £25,000 and a Jean Royere Rare 'Fondperdu' floor lamp, c. 1948 which sold for £57,650 with an estimate of £16,000 - £20,000.
Though this sale is only a step closer to the pre-recession design market results, it proves this market has remained viable and sustainable. From the lots sold, it is clear that collectors are still looking for quality and not risking as much on emerging designers or branded designers.
