Brit Insurance Design of the Year 2010
The 'Fold Plug' by Min-Kyu Choi
Here’s a look at the innovative ‘Fold Plug’ by British design student Min-Kyu Choi that has just won the Brit Insurance Design of the Year 2010. Choi beat over 90 international nominees with his reinterpretation of the standard British pin plug to win the coveted prize.
Antony Gormley, one of the jury panel judges who selected Choi’s design commented, ‘thought-through, responsive and modest, the folding plug shows how intelligent, elegant and inventive design can make a difference to everyone’s life.’
Min-Kyu Choi attributes his inspiration for the design to the ironic situation of carrying around UK pin plug (the world’s largest plug) with the MacBook Air (the world’s thinnest laptop). He first showed the ‘Fold Plug’ design at his RCA graduate show in June 2009.
It is great to see such a practical yet creative design get such recognition. All of the nominated designs are on view at the Design Museum in London through 31st October, 2010.
